Smart Tools for Literary Analysis or Close Reading
Analysis of literary passages or math word problems can be done by using the Smart tools in the Smart Notebook software. Students might use different color highlighters to distinguish between literary devices or to emphasize the important information and mark out the distractor in a word problem.

Summarizing and Note Taking Ideas
Short activities that can be used in lessons to introduce and model new standards or apply knowledge. The Smart notebook file is setup, the user just needs to link to the appropriate content and grade level material.

Don't forget about the basic note taking app on either the droid or the idevices. These programs are usually easy to use and accessible with or without Internet access. Most can email notes as well.

Collect information from anywhere into a single place with Evernote. From text notes to web pages to files to snapshots, everything is always at your fingertips. Share your notes and collaborate on projects with friends, colleagues and classmates. In combination with Skitch, annotate your information including pictures, web pages and more.

Online Highlighter - Users can create a free account, highlight text, change the highlight color, and add notes. All highlights can be saved for future reference.
Penzu - Online Journal - Users can add pictures and email the journal to others if desired. Some teachers have students email their journal at the end of the week.
Lino - Online Stickies -Create a group and post stickies, pictures and videos to your free online canvas.
Tagxedo- (Similar to Wordle) Turns words into a visually stunning word cloud, words individually sized appropriately to highlight the frequencies of occurrence within the body of text.
Padlet (formerly Wallwisher)- Online bulletin board--Internet application that allows people to express their thoughts on a common topic easily.
Wordle- Used to generate “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text.
